ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Prime Minister’s counsel Makhdoom Ali Khan to submit details of all gifts given between the members of the Sharif family under investigation.
A five-member bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Gulzar Ahmad, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ija
z Ul Ahsan heard the case filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf (PTI) and others seeking investigation
into the Panama Papers.
During the course of proceedings, Advocate Makhdoom Ali Khan continued his arguments, saying that his client gave gifts
to his daughter through banks.
He refuted the allegations of tax avoidance and said the exchange of gifts between the prime minister and his children was done legitimately using the banks.
Justice Gulzar Ahmad asked the counsel why the verified bank docu
ments had not submitted before the court. In response the advocate said that obtaining certificates from all the banks was a difficult process.
The documents,
if the court desired, could be provided, he added.
The lawyer also added that the submission of docu
ments regarding the transactions was not necessary since he had already informed the court that gifts were transferred through the banks. He added that
if the court asked for such documents, details of the accounts would be provided.
Makhdoom pointed out that the gifts
to his daughter had been mentioned in the prime minister’s wealth and income tax returns, which have been submitted in the court.
The next hearing of the case was due to be held on Thursday.
